WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Americans enjoying their small windfall from President Barack Obama’s “Making Work Pay” tax credit are in for an unpleasant surprise next spring.
The government is going to want some of that money back.
But new tax withholding tables issued by the IRS could cause millions of taxpayers to get hundreds of dollars more than they are entitled to under the credit, money that will have to be repaid at tax time.
At-risk taxpayers include a broad swath of the public: married couples in which both spouses work; workers with more than one job; retirees who have federal income taxes withheld from their pension payments and Social Security recipients with jobs that provide taxable income.
Obama has touted the tax credit as one of the big achievements of his first 100 days in office, boasting that 95 percent of working families will qualify in 2009 and 2010.
Geithner responded that Treasury and IRS understood the concerns and were “exploring ways to mitigate that effect.”
Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, the top Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, said Geithner has yet to respond to concerns raised by committee members.
“So far we’ve got the, ‘If we don’t address this maybe it will go away’ approach,” Camp said.

The Federal Reserve is refusing to disclose who they loaned $2 trillion tax payer dollars too. They are also refusing to disclose what they accepted as collateral (if anything).
A Federal judge ruled the Federal Reserve must disclose the information. The Federal Reserve has appealed and is claiming they shouldn’t have to do this.

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) — The Federal Reserve asked a U.S. appeals court to block a ruling that for the first time would force the central bank to reveal secret identities of financial firms that might have collapsed without the largest government bailout in U.S. history.
The U.S. Court of Appeals in Manhattan will decide whether the Fed must release records of the unprecedented $2 trillion U.S. loan program launched after the 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. In August, a federal judge ordered that the information be released, responding to a request by Bloomberg LP, the parent of Bloomberg News.
“This case is about the identity of the borrower,” said Matthew Collette, a lawyer for the government, in oral arguments today. “This is the equivalent of saying ‘I want all the loan applications that were submitted.’”
Bloomberg argues that the public has the right to know basic information about the “unprecedented and highly controversial use” of public money. Banks and the Fed warn that bailed-out lenders may be hurt if the documents are made public, causing a run or a sell-off by investors. Disclosure may hamstring the Fed’s ability to deal with another crisis, they also argued. The lower court agreed with Bloomberg.

Lets face it Obama has a lot of new spending planned and will need to increase government revenues substantially. Typically decreases in taxes (especially capital gains) results in an increase in government tax revenues (there is, of course, a point of diminishing returns).
So a cut in taxes will actually earn the government more money than an increase will. It will also encourage investment due to the lower capital gains tax, give businesses more money with which to operate and give individuals more disposable income. seems like a win win win situation to me unless his whole reason for raising them is actually punitive.

Why doesnt Obama support even an audit of the FED? Ron Paul has said multiple times that an audit will not REPLACE monetary policy… it will just show the americans what they have been doing. If they truly havent been ripping off the tax-payers through inflation (hidden tax)… then im sure Ron paul wouldnt mind thier continued existance?
