I have been seeing this infomercial quite often and I’m interested in it, but I am unease about its claims. The infomercial claim that its program teaches you how to buy a tax foreclosure home and gives you advice on how to find them. But doesn’t something like that-or anything that involves taxes-should be handled by a tax attorney. And can you actually buy homes and lands so inexpensive; are there hidden costs that invoves in these treansactions.

I know the program is cheap, but is it worth it?
I am really looking to start investing a little of my money into revenues such as real estate.
Can this be the strategy I should consider?

But the school I am teaching at has been withholding tax money out of ignorance of this law and I can’t figure out how to go about getting the money (a pretty large percentage) back and how to prevent them from doing it in the future. A lawyer is too expensive, please help me figure out what to do.
Edit: Yes, I am talking about Hungarian taxes. The tax treaty between the US stipulates this exemption from income tax for a teachers who work in one of the contracting parties for less than 2 years. It’s not an especially well-known stipulation but it is there and as I said affirmed to me by people in trustworthy positions, but as far as local bureaucrats go it’s not that well-known, probably mostly because they don’t have to deal with American people teaching in their districts everyday. My yearly salary is actually under the $8,500 cut-off so I think that actually means I don’t even need to file a US tax return, but currently just under 40% of my income is withheld from me a month by the Hungarian government, a certain percentage is pension and health insurance which I am not exempt from but another percentage of it is income tax which I am definitely exempt from, and I want to stop losing almost half my income to taxes every month.

When she brings that money back to the United States, will there be taxes due to the IRS from essentially an international inheritance (taxes in Korea were already paid)?

If instead of keeping it herself she wants to give the money to me or my sister, is there a gift tax due to the IRS (filling out a gift tax form and just using up part of my mom and dad’s lifetime gift exemption to me and my sister)?

And what is the actual best method of having those international funds transferred to an U. S. account? (wire transfer, actual check, other?)
Thanks for the responses below.

I called the IRS and they said the same thing. Only other thing they added was that Treasury / Customs form FinCEN-105 (report of international transportation of currency or monetary instruments) had to be filled out within 15 days of that international transfer.
Read instructions for form FinCEN-105.

Apparently only applies to physical transfer of currency across borders. Don’t need to fill out for electronic transfer.

Now I know I have to get this figured out or I may be in trouble. I can’t even remember some of the places I worked long ago, so I need a way to track down all that information. I never worked any high end job, just basic laboring jobs for hourly wages. I don’t make much now at all, so I need the best options, not just a $300 an hour tax attorney. I hope there are people out there that can help.
To ‘Mark’: I wasn’t looking for opinions, just answers. Yours is useless. You have NO idea of what has kept me from filing. Now I’m a single custody-holding father of 2 autistic sons. I’m trying to get my life back on track after it falling apart countless times. Boy, so much displaced anger to go as far as actually posting the worthless comment you did. Pent up hostility. Sounds like someone either has relationship issues, or too many questions about your own manhood. And I’m sure you’d defend that, which don’t nullify what I said. Figure out a different source to take your insecurities out on other than someone simply asking a question and looking for help.
Sorry, wrong name. I meant Gary, not Mark. I guess that’s how memorable your comment was, not at all!

Then you get that “Just quit paying and see what happens” crap

They can’t show the law, but they sure like to throw around prison comments and stuff like “you just wait and see”

It really is quite disturbing

It is just to fishy if you ask me.
But doesn’t all this tax law and confusing language mean that there is something they don’t want in a clear and well understood language.

You only make something confusing to hide something

Don’t the laws apply only to the District of Columbia and certain business

How can they tax my labor since it is private property

Why am I a slave in my own country!

We own a piece of undeveloped land in FL and are considering selling to put a down payment on a house in CA. We have owned it for about 14 years. My husband is military and a FL resident. We currently are stationed in CA and I am a CA resident. The land is a joint tenancy. FL doesn’t have a capital gains tax, but CA does. So I am guessing that we have to split the gain 50/50 and have 50% taxed by the state of CA. We are trying to use an online capital gains tax calculator to figure how much we will have to pay.

We had an assesment to pave the street. Would that be an improvement cost?

Also, the state bought a small portion to widen a highway. Would the money they paid us be deducted from the basis?

How do you come up with the depreciation? My property value has went up (according to the county assessment).

How do you figure out what the tax rate is on the gain?

I know this is tough one, but I appreciate all the help.
